A New Old Hong Kong: Our Design Philosophy

Atelier Shan’s design philosophy has been shaped by years spent working within private clubs, high-end hospitality, and complex architectural environments. It is a way of designing that values context, memory, and long-term use over visual trends.

The studio does not operate around a fixed aesthetic. Instead, each project begins with listening. Understanding the client, the brief, and the world the space belongs to is always the first step. This is especially true within the private club world, where spaces carry strong identity and emotional attachment, and where committees play an active role in decision-making.

Atelier Shan’s experience designing for private clubs has fostered a design philosophy built on restraint and care. Rather than imposing a personal style, the studio works with clients to interpret identity and evolve it thoughtfully. This collaborative approach allows spaces to change without losing what members value most.

References to old Hong Kong, including colonial and mid-century influences, often inform the studio’s work. These references are not used nostalgically, but reinterpreted to suit contemporary high-end environments. The aim is to retain character while refreshing spaces for modern use, particularly in private clubs, clubhouses, and hospitality settings.

Materials play a central role in this philosophy. Fabrics, terrazzo, textured surfaces, and warm finishes are used to introduce comfort and tactility. Materials are selected not as decoration, but as tools that influence how a space feels over time. This attention to sensory design is especially important in environments where functionality and efficiency can otherwise dominate.

An Atelier Shan space is defined by balance. Functionality is clear and resolved, but it is supported by atmosphere, proportion, and materiality. Spaces are designed to feel calm, comfortable, and lived in, whether they are private clubs, villas, or high-end food and beverage destinations.

Preservation is approached with the same sensitivity. Not every project requires restoration, but when a building carries history or cultural value, the studio responds with care. Old building renovation and restoration are treated as responsibilities tied to context and client intent, not as visual statements.

Ultimately, Atelier Shan’s design philosophy is rooted in working with clients. By understanding their world, their constraints, and their ambitions, the studio creates high-end spaces that feel considered, enduring, and deeply aligned with their setting.
