From Concept to Construction

Design does not end when a concept is presented. For many projects, the most important work begins when ideas move into development and construction. Translating a design vision into a built environment requires technical precision, coordination, and careful problem solving.

Atelier Shan often supports projects beyond the concept stage, working with clients, consultants, contractors, and suppliers as designs move toward execution. Concepts are developed into detailed drawings and specifications that allow builders and fabricators to understand how each element should be realised.

This stage is where ideas become practical decisions. Layouts are refined, materials are confirmed, and bespoke elements are resolved so that the design can be built accurately. Clear documentation helps ensure that the original design direction remains consistent throughout the process.

Coordination plays an important role. Interior projects involve many specialists, and the studio often works closely with contractors and consultants to guide decisions as construction progresses. Acting as a trusted advisor to the client, Atelier Shan helps align these teams while keeping the project moving forward.

Challenges inevitably arise during construction. Existing structures, operational requirements, and spatial limitations often require adjustments along the way. Rather than treating these conditions as obstacles, they can become opportunities to strengthen the design.

At Dotcod, a restaurant project for the Hong Kong Cricket Club in Central, the interior involved relocating and redesigning the space within the slope of Theatre lane, with the split levels within the floor plan initially posing a challenge. Instead of removing them, the design embraced the changes in level by organising the interior into three distinct zones. The treatment of steps and ceiling details helped integrate these transitions, turning a structural constraint into a defining feature of the space.

Similar attention to execution can be seen across projects such as Kinsman and residential interiors including The Joi House and Robinson Road, where careful coordination and material decisions ensure that the finished spaces remain aligned with the original concept.

For Atelier Shan, moving from concept to construction is a collaborative process that requires constant attention and adaptability. Through coordination, technical clarity, and thoughtful problem solving, design ideas are carried through to completion in a way that feels coherent and resolved.
